OperaUpClose are creating a live dialogue between the established and the contemporary, using inherited repertoire to champion exceptional new writing. This is the beginning of the Salome journey, returning to the wild hedonism of Oscar Wilde’s text to interrogate powerful themes of gender identity and ableism and create an entirely new libretto to Strauss’ vocal writing. Join us as we share our first steps towards this world premiere of a classic, exploring a bold new electronic and acoustic sound world for chamber ensemble, as heady and challenging today as the original was for audiences of the time.
OperaUpClose is an award-winning UK based touring opera company with storytelling, innovation and partnership at its heart. Intimate in scale, mighty in impact, the scale of our work is always an active artistic choice, giving all performers equal agency as storytellers, challenging audience expectations and making a vital contribution to the sustainability and evolution of the sector.
